Using a Holistic Approach for Sleep Disorder Treatment

Holistic medicine treats the whole patient. Holistic medicine, therefore, considers the patient’s mental and spiritual states as well as their physical condition. A basic tenet of holistic medicine holds that illness is caused by an imbalance within the patient’s life. Can Holistic Medicine be Used to Treat a Sleep Disorder?

Absolutely. With that being said, there are many types of sleep disorders, and they vary in responsiveness to holistic treatments. Just as there are many types of sleep disorders, there are also many causes. Insomnia, for example, is often linked to stress, while some types of sleep apnea have a physical cause, such as excess tissue that is blocking the airway. As such, our team’s first step will usually be to determine the cause of the sleep disorder.

A Closer Look at Insomnia

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that affects millions of people. It can range from transient (a duration of a few days) to chronic (lasting over a month). A person with insomnia may have trouble falling asleep and/or staying asleep. They may wake abnormally early in the morning and/or wake up feeling unrefreshed. Common causes of insomnia include stress and chronic pain or illness.

Treating insomnia may be as simple as helping the patient develop good bedtime habits, such as not drinking coffee or alcohol several hours beforehand and going to bed at roughly the same time every night. If the patient has a physical ailment that can cause insomnia like angina, epilepsy, diabetes or fibromyalgia, they will need treatment for that condition. If the insomnia is caused by stress, the patient will need a way to manage their stress; acupuncture, massage and meditation are examples of holistic therapies that can help the patient relax and get a good night’s sleep.
